Multispectral Imaging (MSI)
Multispectral Imaging (MSI) is a non-destructive optical sensing technique that captures wavelength-dependent spatial data to reveal subtle chemical and physical variations invisible to standard RGB imaging. To advance this field, we have developed a cost-effective, in-house MSI system supporting both reflectance and transmittance imaging. This modular device leverages advanced image processing, machine learning, and deep learning for the robust classification and quantitative assessment of diverse materials.
Our current research focuses on rapid, non-invasive agricultural and food quality applications. Key ongoing projects include estimating USDA soil texture, detecting aflatoxin contamination in food, differentiating reheated coconut oil, and identifying adulterants in turmeric. These studies highlight MSI’s immense potential for non-destructive quality evaluation. Moving forward, we aim to evolve this technology into portable, application-specific MSI systems that seamlessly combine customized optical hardware with intelligent data analysis for practical field and laboratory use.
